Everyone looked on in awe. Like a desert sandstorm, the fog rolled in from the ocean, consuming everything in its path. But, unlike a sandstorm, nobody ran nor took cover. After all, it was merely a low lying cloud; “Molecules of water vapor hanging in the air, like a tight flock of birds morphing into shapes in the sky,” she assured her children. “No reason to be afraid.”
Meridee and her family stood on their front lawn, watching as the damp fog refused to burn away, eating up their street until the suburb became still and their house an island.
“Mommy,” said her son, “why aren’t we in the cloud?”
“We are, sweetheart. You just can’t tell because we’re close enough to see each other through it.”
“Can anyone else see their family?”
“Yes, everyone can, if they choose to. Sometimes, the world becomes engulfed in a dark fog. But, as long as you stay close and focus on what’s important, you’ll continue to see clearly.”
