Jack and Jill were a darling pair;
Jack, with his smile,
And Jill’s long flowing hair.
Their quaint little village sat at the base of a hill,
Life was idyllic,
That was until…
Jack and Jill went up the hill, to fetch a pail of water,
To hydrate their families, water the horses, and soak the swine’s fodder.
But, what poor Jill did not see,
Were the prying eyes of Queen Meridee.
Her palace stood upon the crest.
Jack loved his Jill, but Meridee knew best.
He would be hers, “Whatever it takes!”
The royal’s true happiness was in dire straights.
She fancied Jack, unbeknownst to Jill.
Jack met her eye as he trod up the hill.
Meridee came down to “say hello”,
Her ultimate plan, they did not know.
She was strikingly lovely,
Some called her a dish,
And as most royals do,
Had a non-negotiable wish.
The queen held out her delicate hand,
Welcoming dear Jill to HER land.
But then, without a grimace or sound,
Altruistic Queen Meridee,
Sent Jill tumbling down.
Tut tut….. like your realistic take on the old poem.

You weaved the story into the poem very well. If Jack truly loved Jill, he would be loyal to her and refuse the Queen.

Interesting about Jack and Jill, Sara. I just read a post this week about the original “Jack and Gill” A very creative poem! Altruistic fits perfectly. 😀
