THE WORDS: “Vengeance and retribution require a long time; it is the rule.” ― Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities
My Submission, 150 words:
“Vengeance and retribution require a long time; it is the rule,” his father said, “But, rules are made to be broken.”
Jonathan always wondered what he meant by that. It wasn’t until adulthood, when Jonathan finally spoke to him in prison that he found out.
“Why did you do it, Dad?” he asked, eyes down.
“Remember what I told you when you were a kid?”
Jonathan nodded.
“Carl was out for blood. He was swindling me, trying to take over the family. I had to work fast. It was for the greater good, son.”
“But, he was your brother.”
“He was my brother, until I found out he was having an affair with your Mom.”
“So you killed him?”
“Which brings me to my next question. Why are you in here? Why did you kill your brother Jacob?”
Jonathan shrugged. “He broke the rules when he slept with my wife.”
Runs in the family, apparently! Good sSara
