My Submission, 100 words 🙂

“He’s late, again!” she spat.

“Yeah, typical Dad…”

“You’d think, if there was one day to be on time…doesn’t he care how Mom feels?”

“Felt, you mean? Cut him some slack, Emily. I’m sure it’s not his fault.”

A courier came to the door. “I have a package-”

“What took you so long?”

“Are you Emily Banks?”

She nodded.

“Sign here.”

Emily scribbled a resemblance of her signature, and snatched the box.

Returning to the living room, she removed the urn. Placing it on the fireplace mantle, she turned to her weeping mother, “Would you like to speak first?”

  1. This one made me smile, because my mother was literally late for her own funeral. The casket we’d ordered for her was crossing the pass from Denver to Fruita, and the truck broke down. The young funeral director came to us with deep concern on his face, explaining that it would be at least another hour past the stated starting time for her viewing. He was completely floored when my sister and I laughed. Mom was ALWAYS late, and Dad had often predicted she would be late to her own funeral 🙂

  2. I can imagine how late it would be right now. I ordered a book last March… it just came in this week… that’s overdue! Still waiting for bobbins (for bobbin lace) that I ordered last September.
