Thimbleful Thursday Writing Prompt – Witch Hunt, 200 words

They are always after me

With pitchforks and stones in tow

All I did was make tea

And when I fed him that tea

He got better

Is that not what everyone wanted

For him to get better

Would they prefer he just died

All I did was feed him tea

I did it to comfort him during sickness

To soothe his throat and calm his cough

It worked

And now, I’m a witch

I’ve made that tea before

Many times

True, it comforted broken hearts

Brought moments of peace during times of distress

Warmed bellies on especially cold days

But, it wasn’t witchcraft

It was just tea

Now, they’re after me

Black magic, they claim

I’m in hiding, in the forest, where I foraged those roots and herbs

For my “witches brew”

They’ve all had my tea before

I charge very little considering the work I put in

And although they enjoyed it

It’s now considered witchcraft

Sickness is common here

As is recovery, even without my tea

Ignorantly, I assumed I would be safe, adding that special ingredient

Reciting that spell

How do they know

How did they find out

Someone must have been peeking through my window

  1. We just finished watched the “Outlander” series. Unfortunately, these scenarios took place. Helping someone ill with tea was considered witchcraft. And, yes, likely peaking through the window. A fascinating and thought-provoking post, Sara.
